What Do We Study in First Grade? Guided Reading: Each week as a class we read a story out of our reading textbook. On Thursdays take a test on the weekly reading story. Students are given a weekly comprehension activity to do with their family. Self Selected Reading: A daily teacher read aloud precedes students reading. Each week students pick books to read at their reading level. After students read indivually students share with the class what they have read. Religion: Students study and participate in activites pertaining to 2 Bible stories per week. Spelling:Each week students have 5 spelling words per week. Of the 5 words 2-3 are star words pertaining to a word family. Of each star word students are to master rhyming with words in that word family. Each Friday students have a test on the words including the star word families. After Christmas break students are also given a sentences to spell utilizing words from the word wall. Writing: Following a mini lesson focusing on the English language, or six traits of writing students get the opportunity to write every day. After going through the writing process students get to publish books to share with their families. After our daily writing time students get the opportunity to share their writing with others and help each other grow to become fluent writers. Memory:On Thursday students are to recite the weekly Bible verse. Math: When students arrive in the morning students participate in a math journal responding to a given problem of the day. After the math journal we have a morning meeting containing the calendar, weather, number of days we have been in school, months of the year macarena, Adam's family days of the week, and other math realted items. Then in math we study addition, subtraction, time, money, patterns, 3-D and flat shapes, etc. Science: In Science we study animals, habitats, plants, health, states of matter, weather, energy, speed, magnetism, and living things. Social Studies: In social studies students study communities, school, America, Other countries, Native Americans, Christmas Around the World, and Flat Stanley. A big highlight is making paper mache' Native Americans, and having a Thanksgiving feast with Second grade. |
